Ultrasound scanners generate images of the body’s blood vessels, tissues and internal organs through the use of sound waves, which create the images seen on the monitor in an ultrasound scan. During a scan, sound waves are directed into the body and then reflected back into the scanning mechanism, which measures the waves. By measuring the frequency of sound waves, ultrasound technicians can get glimpse at all the moving structures and organs in the body. This includes checking the way that blood moves through different blood vessels in order to asses the health of a patient’s organs, blood vessels and soft tissue. Ultrasound technology is faster and easier to use than most other types of medical imaging, including MRI systems and CT scanning, and it can be used to assess the health and current condition of many different parts of the body. Ultrasound machines are often used to produce Echocardiograms for heart attack patients, and to examine internal areas of the female pelvis and assist with needle-based biopsies. The typical ultrasound system includes a user control panel, a probe for scanning, and a monitor for viewing the images that are produced. When a patient is getting an ultrasound scan, the technician first applies a water-based gel onto the skin that covers the areas to be scanned. This makes it possible for the sound waves produced by the ultrasound probe to travel through the skin to the tissues, blood vessels and organs below. As the probe moves along the skin, the reflected sound waves create an image on the monitor, allowing the ultrasound technician to see inside the body quickly and painlessly.
