Nuclear cameras provide a type of imaging technology that follows a tracer as it moves through the body, capturing images along the way. This type of medical imaging is most often used for scans of the lungs, liver, gallbladder, brain, thyroid and the kidneys, and is also used for views of the complete skeletal structure. For nuclear cameras (also known as gamma cameras) to work, patient’s swallow a radioactive tracer that is designed to emit a small amount of radiation as it moves through the body. As the radiation is emitted, it is picked up by a specialized crystal that moves when gamma rays are detected. Special light sensors pick up on the flash of light that is generated and it’s converted into an electrical signal, which is then transmitted to a monitor or computer screen. For this advanced form of medical imaging to take place, there are several components that work together, including a collimator, critical for high quality images, a specialized crystal, photomultiplier tube, pre-amplifier, circuits, amplifier, display and the gantry.
